Visiting Masada

Posted on: October 25, 2012

Anyone that is searching for a perfect holiday in Israel should consider visiting Masada and the Dead Sea. This area, perhaps as famous as Jerusalem itself, is filled with many historical and modern attractions.

Masada is a flat monolith that jettisons up from the edge of the Dead Sea. Here, on this mountaintop, almost 2000 years ago a band of Jewish people took their stand against the Roman Empire. Even now, Masada holds a special place in the hearts of the Jewish people. Many come to Masada to have their Bar Mitzvahs to honor those who lost their lives there.

Next to Masada is the Dead Sea. This area has the lowest elevation on Earth, and has the most highly concentrated salt water in any body of water. Tourists love to come to come to the Dead Sea just to say they have floated in the water. Nothing can sink in this water.

Near Masada and the Dead Sea are many places to enjoy a sulphur or mud bath. Both of these baths are thought to have healing properties. Many visitors to Masada also enjoy hiking in the area which is famous for its exotic animals and vast caves. It is in these caves that the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.

The Masada area is now a national park, and there are many historical sites that are included in this area. Visitors will find that where the river Jordan meets the Dead Sea is thought to be the baptismal place of Jesus, and the area where Sodom and Gomorrah once stood. This area is also near Qumran, the city where it is thought that John the Baptist lived with his followers.

This area is truly a unique place to visit, and should be experienced by everyone at some time during their life.
