The Dead Sea is known as the lowest place on Earth, sitting 417 meters below sea level on the borders of the Middle Eastern countries of Jordan, Israel and Palestine. Also known as the salt sea, the high concentration of salt and minerals within its waters has made both the water and mud of the region well known for their health and skin benefits.

The Dead Sea is the deepest salt water lake in the world and has been measured at 377 meters in depth. Dead Sea Mud and water contains an average of 33 percent salt and minerals, this can be contrasted with salt and mineral levels of just three percent in the average ocean salt water. Because of the high levels of salt and minerals, coupled with the low elevation of the lake research into the properties of the lake have been ongoing since the 18th century.

Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote about the waters healing abilities and settlements have been found in the area dating back to prehistoric times.
